Invested in shares, not sure where to start
- Modelled out her current trajectory including superannuation, shares and investment properties
- Build a property portfolio that will one day enable her and her partner to purchase their own home to raise a family
- Owns two investment properties in Brisbane
Britt moved from the USA 5 years ago and didn’t really have a plan on how long she wanted to stay in Australia so she was renting an apartment in Bondi with her partner. She knew she wanted to put a financial strategy in place now to reach her and her partners goals for the future. Prior to reaching out to Montara, Britt was working at Amazon where she would receive shares as part of her job.
“I got to the point where I realised I needed to diversify my share portfolio, but I didn’t have the knowledge or tools to be able to do this myself and had no idea where to start. One of my work friends had worked with Montara and spoke very highly of Dave and the team, so I asked her for a referral”.
Britt was unfamiliar with investing, especially in a new country she didn’t grow up in.
“At the time I was solely thinking about how I could invest my money into shares as it was something I’d already done. I viewed buying a home as something I would do in the future as I was unsure about where I wanted to be living and if I was even going to be living in Australia longer term. However, when I started working with Montara, it became clear that I had other options and that I we could create a much larger financial strategy that didn’t mean I had to purchase a place to live in.”
We sat down with Britt to understand her situation and goals so that we were able to make some short-term recommendations that would effectively benefit her in the future. Britt has a strong sense of the lifestyle she wants so we were able to assist her in building a wealth plan around meeting these lifestyle goals in the best possible way.
“Originally when I reached out to Montara it was really about getting help with expanding my share portfolio, so I wasn’t really sure about the other options I had to reach my wealth goals”.
“I didn’t know where I wanted to be long term and purchasing a place where I live now in Bondi was really expensive.”
Working with Montara
Since Britt doesn’t know where her and her partner will be living in the future, we mapped out some investment options with this in mind. These included:
- Rentvesting – rent where she currently lives and invest elsewhere
- Establishing a share portfolio to build a diversified portfolio
- Adjusting her superannuation to a portfolio that will work as hard as she is to secure her retirement
- Covering off her insurance options to ensure she has downside protection
We referred Britt to Binnari Property to assist with the purchase of her first investment property.
“Since Sydney housing prices are already quite high and have already experienced market growth, I liked the idea of being able to look elsewhere that had better capital growth prospects. After purchasing the first property it was possible for me to purchase another. Montara helped strategise how I could fund this second property”.
“The whole process from our first meeting to now has been fantastic and this is one of the reasons I didn’t shop around for another financial planner. It was just a great fit and the cost is reasonable for what we’re getting out of it. The team is easy to work with and very personable – it felt like I was meeting with a friend. I also assumed the financial approach would be conservative and that I would be having to put tight budgets in place, but Montara really challenged this thinking. I thought I had to wait to make some investments, but David and Ethan said ‘why don’t we do it now?’ and showed me how this was possible with a detailed financial model. I had a really good experience with the team”.
FIND OUT HOW WE CAN HELP
“My biggest reservation was around how much a financial planner would cost and the overall value I would be receiving as a result of that service. There’s a range of experience and knowledge that you get from different planners, and I’d worked with a couple who never seemed like a good fit in the past. But what I really liked about Montara was the partnership with Binnari Property (the property investment advisory) and having access to both services. It was great to have a well-rounded investment strategy that was all provided in house.”
